Quick answer
A private language-learning extension that keeps your deck on your device
NoaLingua stores vocabulary, review history, settings, downloaded packs and translation cache in the Chrome profile. After compatible dictionaries, grammar data, examples and Chrome models are prepared, many lookups and some translations can work without sending the sentence away.
How it works
What stays local
Saved cards, source sentences, review scheduling, games, settings, video progress, bookmarks and downloaded dictionaries live in browser storage. Pronunciation attempts keep scores and missed words, not your voice recording. A profile can be exported as a JSON file for backup or transfer.
How it works
What may use the network
Static language packs are downloaded from published data sources. Optional online dictionary lookups send one word, not the subtitle sentence. Cloud translation sends the sentence only when that translation mode is selected. Online speech recognition sends voice audio only when the user explicitly enables it.
How it works
The honest cost of local-first software
Offline capability is not magic. Packs take disk space, the largest Wiktionary data can be substantial, and a new language may need 15–30 minutes to finish preparing. There is no NoaLingua cloud account automatically syncing a deck to a phone. Local control trades some convenience for ownership.
How it works
How to prepare for offline study
- Choose the language you are learning and the language you translate to.
- Leave Chrome open while Settings → Downloads prepares dictionary, grammar and example packs.
- Download the Chrome translation or speech model when your language pair supports it.
- Export a profile file periodically if the deck matters to you.
Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
Does NoaLingua work completely offline?
Some core lookups and review can work offline after packs are downloaded. Coverage varies by language and Chrome model availability; YouTube or Netflix content itself still requires access to the site.
Does NoaLingua have analytics?
No. The product manual states that study statistics are calculated locally and are not sent to NoaSolutions.
How do I move my vocabulary to another computer?
Export the NoaLingua profile as a JSON file and import it on the other browser. Settings alone can optionally use Chrome sync, but the full deck stays in the profile file.
